The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

Inauguration of the tunnel, which is 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion and Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.

The city's rich history was a reason that it was a popular tourist destination during the time of its glory. Elkin said that, today along with its historical treasures the tunnel project includes modern tourism. "The inauguration (of the tunnel) is a further step in the expansion of Jerusalem and it's transformation into a sought-after tourist destination for all kinds of audiences across Israel as well as across the globe."

נווה פריצקי Elkin the minister whose ministry as well as the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that the Jerusalem Municipality's ministry "invests hundreds to millions of shekels per year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem's tourists and in the development and operation of innovative attractions, ventures and attractions which connect the rich past of Jerusalem to the future". Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to transform the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem.  נווה פריצקינווה פריצקי Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike paths. The tunnel will also be paved throughout its different areas. It will also help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.

נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure Tunnel that includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The works currently underway include road construction, installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through at all times of the year.
